What is the BMI calculator and where do I get access to it?

A. This is a tool to calculate your body mass index which is a measure of your height and weight that can be compared to other people. To get this calculation, simply go to www.ultraprevention.com/tools/body_mass_index.htm

Is soy really good for you, if not, what alternatives do you suggest?

A. Yes soy is good for you. In real food, in amounts normally eaten in the cuisine in which it has been enjoyed for centuries. Eaten in tofu, tempeh, edamame (fresh soybeans), or soy nuts it is a good source of protein, isoflavones as well as other vitamins and minerals that can reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and help your bones. It becomes a concern only when eaten in large amounts in processed foods.

What are the best brands of supplements and where can I get them?

A.  This is a big concern – the quality of supplements.  There are many poor quality supplements on the markets. However there are companies with more integrity and diligence that produce higher quality, well absorbed supplements. The brands found in health food stores are typically of higher quality than those found in drug stores. There are also brands available to health practitioners which are quite good including Metagenics, Prothera, Pure Encapsulations, and more. I use them all in my practice.

Though I have no affiliation with any company, I have sought out the most effective, highest quality products and supplements. These are the ones I recommend in my practice, complete with notes about their benefits and doses.

For more information on supplements I recommend or answers to common questions, please visit www.ultrametabolism.com/supplements Also, for a more detailed description of herbs and supplements, please go to page 321 in my new book UltraMetabolism. I spend a lot of time explaining common herbs, supplements and offer other resources for healthy living.

A.  I receive a lot of questions about food and nutrition. Starting on page 276 of UltraMetabolism I have close to 40 pages with wonderful recipes. Then on page 216, I list wonderful options for finding:

  • Organic essentials
  • Produce
  • Meat, Poultry, eggs and dairy
  • Fish
  • Nuts, seeds and oils
  • Beans and Legumes

  • Spices, seasonings, sauces, soups
  • Beverages
  • Organic herbal teas

Is it normal to not lose weight right away?

A.  It may be. If you are not losing weight and following the recommendations carefully in the plan, then there may be a specific reason that has not been properly diagnosed. One of the underlying keys to UltraMetabolism may be an issue such as thyroid, toxicity or inflammation and further tests as outlined in the book may be necessary.

Where can I find out more information about managing my thyroid?

A. I just recently wrote a detailed article about thyroid. Please click this link www.ultrametabolism.com/blog/thyroid/

What kind of protein powders are acceptable?

A.  There are many protein powders on the market – soy, rice, whey, egg, pea protein and more. The main thing to be concerned about is what ELSE in in them – sugar, artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, non-nutritive chemicals or food additives. Try to use products from health food stores which tend to be better, or from companies that cater to health practitioners such as Metagenics.
